The first appearance of the Black Russian is in 1949 and its creation is credited to Gustave Tops. He was a Belgian barman who worked at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels. He created it in honor of the then United States Ambassador to Luxembourg, Perle Mesta.
This classic drink has only two ingredients, vodka and coffee liqueur. It is simply made by pouring the two over ice in a rocks glass. Add cream and you have its slightly evolved and more popular sister cocktail. Neither has any known Russian origins but are named so due to vodka being the main ingredient.
