The Black Velvet is an unusual mourning drink originated at the Brook’s Club of London, in 1861. It is said that upon the death of Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, the distinguished gentlemen of the member’s only club acknowledged his death with this cocktail. Appropriately shrouded in black and combined with champagne fit for royalty, this cocktail was apt for the occasion.
