The Brandy Alexander is a rich and decadent cocktail that may remind many of the 70s along side the equally rich Grasshopper. However, the original Alexander was born out of a time where gin was the spirit of choice and it’s poor quality was masked with sweet ingredients. At some point unknown, post-Prohibition gin was replaced by brandy or the finer Cognac.
There’s been many variations over the years such as an Irish Alex that calls for Irish cream in place of crème de cacao. Not looking for an indulgent dessert-like cocktail? Go heavy on the brandy and light on the sweet stuff.
