Incorporate the Grasshopper from yesteryear with its vibrant green creme de menthe, velvety white creme de cacao, and a touch of cream. The creme de menthe, crafted by infusing mint leaves into alcohol, sweetening, and bottling after a brief aging process, brings a refreshing twist. Complementing this is the white creme de cacao, a decadent liqueur offering a chocolate flavor with a smooth, buttery texture.
The Grasshopper cocktail supposedly originated in 1918 in New Orleans, Louisiana, by Philip Guichet, a bar owner in the French Quarter. However, it didn’t gain widespread popularity until the 1950s. By the disco era, it had become a staple at bars. Named for its green color derived from creme de menthe, the Grasshopper resembles melted mint-chocolate-chip ice cream and offers a similar flavor experience. Much like ice cream this is a treat typically enjoyed as an after dinner dessert-like drink.
