Jockey Club With Bourbon Sweet Vermouth And Maraschino Liqueur

Countless renditions exist of the classic Manhattan cocktail. One intriguing twist is the Jockey Club variation, featuring bourbon, sweet vermouth, and maraschino liqueur. This delightful concoction, shared by seasoned bar expert and distiller Allen Katz, traces its roots back to David Embury’s 1948 masterpiece, The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks. Essentially a bourbon Manhattan with a hint of maraschino liqueur and an absence of bitters.

Maraschino liqueur stands apart from the vibrant red cherries often seen atop sundaes. Crafted from Maraska cherries, these small, tangy fruits were initially grown along Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast. Multiple distilleries create maraschino liqueurs, which tend to be bittersweet, boasting subtle hints of almond. This liqueur pairs harmoniously with bourbon, creating a delightful balance of flavors. When combined with sweet vermouth’s herbal notes and floral undertones, it elevates the whiskey experience, making it a favored choice in cocktails like the classic Jockey Club.
