Originally served as a shooter in a shot glass, the Kamikaze has evolved into is current elevated cocktail form. It is believed to have been created sometime after World War II in a U.S. naval base, alas its exact origins are unknown. During the vodka craze in the 1970s and 1980s the cocktail boomed in popularity.
The Kamikaze combines vodka, orange liqueur, and lime juice, shaken and served up as a cocktail or as shooters in two shot glasses. With those ingredients it doesn’t take much imagination to look at it as simply a vodka Margarita. However, a more closely related vodka-based cocktail would be the Cosmopolitan, created as a cranberry-spiked riff on the Kamikaze.
