Martinez Gin Sweet Vermouth Maraschino Liqueur Bitters Shaken Cocktail

While many claim it to be the precursor to the Martini, The Martinez is best described as a gin Manhattan. Its exact origins are unclear but this exact recipe’s first known recording is in Jerry Thomas’ 1887 edition of The Bar-tender’s Guide. However, similar variations are found in other publications around the same time.

This Martinez recipe is composed of London Dry gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and bitters. The original recipe called for Old Tom gin which is a sweetened gin, however this made it an overly sweet drink, to avoid this be sure to use a dry gin.
