Joaquín Simó, while at Death & Co, crafted the Naked and Famous cocktail as a delightful variation of the Last Word. The equal-parts classic cocktail is an enticing mixture that combines gin, green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur, and lime juice. The Naked and Famous cocktail, however, takes a twist by replacing the Last Word’s robust green Chartreuse with the milder and sweeter yellow Chartreuse. It also incorporates lime juice and Aperol. Furthermore, it surprises the taste buds by choosing mezcal as the unexpected base spirit.
Simó describes it as the result of a forbidden Oaxacan romance between the classic Last Word and Sam Ross’ Paper Plane cocktail. In the decade since its creation in 2011 the Naked & Famous has become a noteworthy spin-off that has achieved its own place in modern classic cocktail history.
