The Stinger is a two-ingredient cocktail that uses a spirit and a liqueur. Its origins can be traced to the 1890’s and remained popular through most of the 20th century. It gained popularity during the prohibition era, for the crème de menthe could mask the taste of the inferior-quality brandies of the time. The French Connection and the Rusty Nail are duo cocktails that follow the same format.
