Stone Fence Apple Cider Rum Brandy Rye Bourbon Whiskey Bitters Lemon Juice Iced Fall Cocktail

The Stone Fence has historic ties to the Revolutionary War. Legend has it, in 1775, Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys imbibed in a mixture of rum and hard cider before raiding Fort Ticonderoga. The fort was seized successfully without much resistance, perhaps thanks to the liquid courage from the Stone Fence.

Overtime whiskey production out paced rum, creating versions of this mixed drink using brandy or whiskey. Today, it can be found made with any of these three spirits. Modern versions have built on the two ingredient base and introduced a few dashes of bitters and a sprig of mint for a slightly more sophisticated cocktail.

The Stone Fence is a great year-round drink but particularly festive in the autumn months when fresh pressed apple cider is more readily available. For more apple cider cocktails, look to the Mulled Spiked Cider and the Apple Ginger Snap, which can be easily made spirit-free.
