Created in 1930s New Orleans at the Carousel Bar at the Monteleone Hotel located in what is known as the Vieux Carré (French Quarter). This drink takes the typical Manhattan ingredients, rye whiskey, sweet vermouth and Angostura bitters, and combines cognac, benedictine, and Peychaud’s bitters. Its flavor is complex, strong, and can be a challenge to balance.
Vieux Carre, pronounced ‘Vyuh Cah-ray,’ is a French term that literally translates to old square.
