The Tequila Sunrise is a cocktail built tall on the rocks, made with tequila, orange juice, and grenadine. It is served unmixed and easily recognizable for its sunrise effect. The order of the colors can be misleading as the preparation for this drink calls for grenadine to be poured last, when it will then sink to the bottom, simply give it a light stir to achieve the hazy early morning look.

There are origin stories for this iconic cocktail involving different ingredients, however, the modern popular version involves The Rolling Stones. The drink was created in the 1970s by Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice, two young bartenders at Trident in Sausalito, California. They served the Tequila Sunrise at a private event celebrating the launch of The Rolling Stones 1972 tour, where the drink immediately became a favorite of Mick Jagger and his entourage. During their tour, they ordered the cocktail across the country, propelling the drink into popularity.

There are endless variations on the Tequila Sunrise that swap out the tequila base or the ingredient that gives the red coloring. This recipe’s flavor is sweet and refreshing, landing it on beach resort menus alongside tropical drinks like the Jungle Bird, Piña Colada, and Sex on the Beach. This cocktail isn’t limited to the sun and sand, it’s incredibly easy to make and enjoy at home.

The Tequila Sunrise can be made sans tequila for an easy spirit free cocktail.
