Frozen Margaritas are ubiquitous in every Tex-Mex and Mexican restaurant in America. They’ve largely evolved from their traditional sweet and sour mix to employ fresh ingredients and added novelty ingredients. However, one element remains the same, the machine that serves them.
In 1971, Mariano Martinez opened his restaurant and quickly established it as one of the best places in town to get sizzling fajitas and blended Margaritas. With the number of blended margs he served on a nightly basis, he ran into consistency problems. The answer to the problem came from an unexpected source: 7-11 Slurpee machines.
While Martinez was not the first to serve blended Margaritas, his machine-made version helped propel the Frozen Margarita in the popularity it has endured through the many decades. Proof of his lasting impact is shown with his machine siting the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington D.C.
