Oaxaca Old Fashioned With Mezcal Reposado Tequila Agave Syrup Angostura Bitters On The Rocks Cocktail

This smoky agave-based cocktail helped launch the mezcal craze in the United States. The Oaxaca Old Fashioned, a riff on the classic Old Fashioned, combines three agave elements. It uses Mezcal, which hails from the Mexican state Oaxaca (hence the cocktail’s name), is a smoky agave spirit slightly aged in oak barrels. It combines it with the smoother reposado tequila and agave syrup, which softens the smokiness from the mezcal.

It was created in 2007 by Philip Ward of New York’s Death & Co. While there are many variations on the classic Old Fashioned, the Oaxaca is a truly innovative one that paved the way for many more mezcal cocktails.
