The modern day Eggnog cocktail is a holiday classic in North America, typically served from October to December. Traditionally it’s a combination of rum, cognac, cream, egg, vanilla, and cinnamon and nutmeg spices. It is similar to the British Egg Flip, but the term “Eggnog” is seen first in 1775 Colonial America.
Both cocktails likely date back much further to the Medieval British drink called posset. This drink combined hot milk curdled by wine or ale seasoned with spices and was used as a cold and flu remedy. Today’s Eggnog can be served either iced or warm and has a Martini variation.
